The Centers of Pediatric Palliative Care, like the Day Centers “San Gabriel” in San Jose and “Dr. Gastón Acosta Rúa” in Pérez Zeledón, are intermediate places between the Hospital and the hearth, where there is offered to him attention to patients whose handling needs treatment in a way that offers him professional resources and of cozy ambience.

At these Centers:

  • We can educate the family and health personnel in fundamental aspects of palliative care.
  • The focus is on the quality of life of the patient and his family, meeting all their needs.
  • We seek to maximize the self-esteem, minimize your dependence and promote confidence.
  • It provides a source of rest, for the people who care for the small.
  • We guarantee the continuity of care and promote social interaction through community support networks.
  • Wasting the isolation of patients and their families.
  • Channelling community resources thus enabling them to join the voluntary work, thus achieving save economic resources.

At the day care centers we deliver to the patients and their families the following services:

  • Medical Care.
  • Spiritual support.
  • Social Support.
  • Psychological Support.
  • Nursing care.
  • Entertainment and games.
  • Special Therapies: physical therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, music therapy, among others.
  • Education, training and support to enable the patients’ family to give the best attention and care to the sick children.
  • Support Groups for parents or caregivers.
  • Support Group for children and young people cared.

All of this, to provide a space for resting, relaxing, and sharing in family. We also have the support of trained volunteers, and supervised by the multidisciplinary team.

The Foundation’s Day Care Centers are:

Day Care Center San Gabriel

Since 18 Years ago the Foundation opens its doors with its first day-care center San Gabriel in Paseo Colon in order to provide quality care. Here our patients come to pass from Tuesday to Friday from 8:00am to 2:00pm to be staffed by multidisciplinary teams and to undertake such activities as musician therapy, art therapy, therapy dogs, among others. These are a form of psychotherapy that uses the artistic media as the primary mode of communication. Each one of them are used in various diagnoses or difficulties as the emotional, behavioral problems or mental health, learning, physical disabilities, neurological situations. In summary we provide everything that enables us to meet our objective to ensure a better quality of life and a dignified death to our children. The idea is that the patient and his family, in addition to being served, come and perform daily activities that do not, by what the foundation offers the service of dining room, massage therapy for parents, manicure, among others. By means of people with big hearts who donate their services.

Objetives

General Objetives:

To offer the children, girls and adolescents in condition of limited and/or terminal life, of the national territory, an attention integral, and continuous, based on the philosophical and practical beginning of the palliative care.

Specifics Objetives:

  • Provide comprehensive care to patients and their families in a different environment to the hospital and home.
  • Provide a change of positive environment.
  • Allow monitoring the evolution of the patient, so as to be able to make adjustments in the procedures of care and attention of the same.
  • Expand the coverage to children and their families.
  • Educate the family of the patient during the process of illness and bereavement.
  • Offer an efficient, timely and continuous.
  • Provide a place of rest for the people who care for the small.
  • Provide an opportunity for the community to join the voluntary work.
  • Allow social interaction, and to eliminate the isolation of the patient and his family.

Day Care Center Gastón Acosta-Rua

The day-care center Acosta Rua in Perez Zeledon was born in 2007 with the objective to decentralize our services and as well provide all families of the Brunca region of all those scenarios of intervention that we provide with the same purpose, to provide quality of life for pediatric patients who need Palliative Care.

The opening hours in the day-care center for the time being, it is provides the days Thursday and Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm, because in this area are given priority to visit municipals.

Each of these centers is maintained and operated through the medium of people in a selfless way, come to our call, and are present in various activities and campaigns, which allow us meet the basic needs of the same.

Objetives

General Objetives:

Offer to children, and adolescents in condition of life limited and/or terminal, which live in the Brunca region of Costa Rica, a comprehensive and continuous care, based on the philosophical and practical principles of palliative care.

Specific Objectives:

  • To offer attention specializing in Pediatric Palliative Care in the South Region of the country.
  • To prepare a situational diagnosis of the children, girls and adolescents who demand palliative care in the South Area.
  • To improve the accessibility to the services of pediatric palliative care.
  • To improve the quality of the attention to the patients who need pediatric palliative care.
  • To involve civil organizations that are employed in the field of palliative care at the decentralization process.
  • To improve the decisive capacity of the Basic Teams of Attention in Health (EBAIS).
  • To qualify in basic aspects of Palliative Care the basic teams of integral attention in health, (EBAIS) and the hospitals of the area.
  • To make use of the communal initiatives, which are not institutional (like a hospital), in the attention of children, girls and adolescents who need assistance in palliative cares.

Goal

To receive 100 % of the children, girls and adolescents of this area who need palliative care.

Coverage

In 2007, it was started with a 12 children population and it turned into 152 attended by the date of January 2013. These patients were from the zones of:

  • Pérez Zeledón: San Isidro del General, General, Daniel Flores, Rivas, San Pedro, Platanares, Pejibaye, Cajón, Barú, Río Nuevo, Páramo.
  • Buenos Aires: Buenos Aires, Volcán, Potrero Grande, Boruca, Pilas, Colinas, Chángena, Biolley, Brunca.
  • Corredores: Corredores, Ciudad Neily, La Cuesta, Paso Canoas, Laurel.
  • Osa: Puerto Cortés, Palmar, Sierpe, Bahía Ballena, Piedras Blancas.
  • Golfito: Golfito, Puerto Jiménez, Guaycará, Pavón.
  • Coto Brus: San Vito, Sabalito, Agua Buena, Limoncito, Pittier.
